Ōtaki historical journal

The Ōtaki Historical Journal records the stories of our district — its people, organisations, landscapes and community life. The primary area covered by the journals is the Otaki region. However, there are also articles about the rich history of the broader region, stretching from the mouth of the Rangītikei River in the north to Paekākariki in the south, and to the Tararua Range in the east.

Current historical journal

We at Ōtaki Heritage are proud to continue what the Otaki Historical Society started way back in 1978 – a great achievement! The past four decades have shown that readers enjoy our stories here, in other parts of Aotearoa too – and internationally.

Ōtaki historical journal
Volume 46: 2025

This year’s volume has two bilingual articles – a first for the journal. One outlines the history of the iwi revitalisation programme Whakatupuranga Rua Mano ǀ Generation 2000, and the other looks at the regeneration of the Mangapouri Stream. We also feature a well-known landscape designer, the stories of some community and sporting organisations, and we pay tribute to some of the people who have died recently.

The broad scope of topics covered by the historical journal has created a resource that is useful to current and former residents of the region, to local history researchers, as well as to students and family historians. The journal began in 1978 under the Ōtaki Historical Society and has grown into a major record of local heritage. In 2023, the Society amalgamated with the Ōtaki Heritage Bank Preservation Trust to form Ōtaki Heritage, which now continues the journal series under a single organisation.

Explore the complete index of articles from Volumes 1–46. The index is available in two downloadable PDFs, making it easy to search for people, places and stories across the entire series.

You can purchase the latest journal, order past volumes, or download PDF editions through our online shop. You can also buy our latest journal at our Ōtaki Heritage Museum, Ōtaki Post Shop and the Ōtaki Bookshop (all in the town area) and at Books & Co at Ōtaki Railway (Main Highway).
